I am using a canvas on board 10" x 12", 2 flat brushes (synthetic). 1 small round brush and 3 colours + white.
I have laid white in two parts, the first one for the light shades and the second for the darker shades. It helps colours to do not get messy.
Of course I have deep cadmium yellow, cadmium medium red and ultramarine. By mixing red + yellow on one site and mixing Blue + Red on another side, the two sides mixed together give a beautiful brown or ochre, you can add a bit of yellow or white to change the shades.

I have drawn a rough sketch, with a watercolour pencil the reason being that once you apply the paint the pencil marks will vanish. I have circled the area of interest (golden section). There I will either position a boat or make a special effect with colour or light.

I am starting with the sky, before to lay down the paint I wet the sky area, then with a flat brush and a mixture of red and yellow I start at the bottom, then I add some white to go to the top of the picture. I let it dry.

I rewet the sky, I have prepared a brownish mixture that I add to the cloud.

Since your paint is wet you can dab the clouds with kitchen towel or sponge

have added a mixture of Ultramarine blue and a small dash of red on the top right corner of the sky and with some White I make the softness of the clouds with fingertips

I start forming the rocks with a mixture of made brown and ultramarine

I start the sea using the same colour that I have used on the sky.

Here is a little tip to lay down exicting colours. Lay strips of different colours next to one another (when making the sea) DO NOT FORGET TO DAMP THE WORKING AREA BEFORE LAYING THE PAINT
Then with a damp brush, working horizontally, criss cross the paint and carry on working with these colours while the paint is wet.

Here is a special effect on the sea, drag with the brush some white paint. Apply as shown by pressing and dragging the brush on the surface.

I place some subjects, boats here and there, refine the painting, decide to change a few colours.

And here is the final painting
It is difficult to show how the work is done, however with a few photos I hope to give a few tips. If you need to understand more, just email me :
